If the majority of Americans were not sufficiently repulsed by the horrific slaughter of twenty children, just a little more than babies, at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012 to work until the Second Amendment was repealed, we will never accomplish that goal. Never, never, never.
So, let’s stop with all the fake thoughts and prayers, all the sobbing crowds lining streets paying homage as black hearses roll by carrying the newly slain bloodless bodies, all the placement of white crosses, flowers, and soulful tributes near the sites of our oh so typical American mass murders. As a nation, we simply value our ability to own guns more than we value the lives of innocents. Period. Our lived experience has proved that fact beyond refutation. If that were not the case, we would have changed our present condition a long time ago.
It doesn’t matter what excuses we put forth. Hey, guns don’t kill people; people kill people. Right. If we can only keep weapons out of the hands of the mentally ill, we’d all be safe. Sure, that supposedly would work if we had a system of national or even statewide mental health assessment, which we do not and will not in the foreseeable future. And strict gun control laws would be our salvation if only we could get them passed. Fat chance in today's political climate.
We do not want to admit it, but by this time we’ve all become accustomed to ghastly scenes of wholesale slaughter on national news. We’ve gotten more than a little jaded since, for the vast majority of us, none of our loved ones were cut down in cold blood by people who love the Second Amendment and bought their weapons of slaughter legally. Thanks to the NRA and their minions in Congress who claim to love the Constitution and to be appropriately saddened by the latest list of slain innocents, their bodies shredded by high-velocity bullets.
We are, after all, what most conservatives say we are, an EXCEPTIONAL nation. Only this time that vaunted status is demonstrably true because we stand out as unique in the world as a country whose citizens value gun ownership more than they value innocent human life. That’s just the way it is. Get used to it because the next mass slaughter of innocents by a gun lover is right around the corner.
And, please, no more hypocritical thoughts and prayers or weepy street-side vigils. They don’t mean a damned thing in a country where guns are GOD and the deaths of innocents are the price of our worship.
